On Wednesday, March 11, 2026, Aeri Konno (1st year Graduate School of Economics) participated in the Great East Japan Earthquake Memorial Event - Tomoshibi Project (Utsunomiya branch) at Orion Square (Utsunomiya City, Tochigi Prefecture). This event commemorates the 15th anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake and includes prayers for the victims, prayers for the recovery of the affected areas, and a pledge to work towards disaster prevention.
On the day of the event, each participant wrote a heartfelt message on a plastic cup, which was then neatly arranged in a design featuring bells and feathers, symbolizing the wish to "go further." After sunset, approximately 5,000 candles floating in the water inside the cups were lit simultaneously.
Ms. Konno belongs to the laboratory of Professor Sotaro Tsuboi in the same graduate school. As part of her research on disaster prevention education, she participated in the event, assisting with venue setup, signage creation, and visitor guidance. Through this event, she commented that "even after the passage of time since the disaster, participating in this event allowed me to learn about the significance of community disaster prevention and disaster response."
We will continue to work towards contributing to improving regional disaster prevention capabilities and disaster response capabilities through surveys, research, and practical field work.
