From February 18 (Wed.) to 20 (Fri.), 2026, 20 students of the Department's Geography course conducted fieldwork in and around Minami-Boso and Tateyama City, Chiba Prefecture, as part of the Geography Field Training course offered by Teikyo University Faculty of Liberal Arts Department of History Associate Professor Junpei Hirano, Ph.
The purpose of this internship is to gain an understanding of the nature, agriculture, and tourism of the Minami Boso region through fieldwork.
With the cooperation of the Awa Agricultural Cooperative Tomiura Branch, the NPO Oyama Senmaida Preservation Society, and Chiba Minamiboso Roadside Station Tomiura Loquat Club, the students were able to gain an in-depth understanding of agriculture and tourism rooted in the local climate. Through a variety of on-site learning experiences, including observing the land-tied island of Okinoshima in Tateyama City, interviewing the Tomiura Loquat Direct Sales Center about loquat cultivation, observing the landslide topography and rice terraces at Oyama Senmaida, and listening to a lecture on tourism at the Tomiura Loquat Club Roadside Station, the students learned about the local nature and people's activities from multiple perspectives.
Participating students commented that "Through the interview surveys conducted during this training, I was able to deepen my understanding of the relationship between climatic conditions and agriculture, which can only be understood on-site."
The students will use the fieldwork methods they learned this time to further their research in the future.
