A student from Faculty of Science and Engineering won the President's Award at the Invention and Innovation Contest.Utsunomiya Campus

On Sunday, February 1, 2026, at the 20th Annual University Student Invention and Ingenuity Contest, sponsored by the Japan Society for Industrial Technology Education, the team of Yuto Otaki (3rd year, Faculty of Science and Engineering and Engineering), Sota Muto (3rd year, Faculty of Science and Engineering), and Sota Suzuki (3rd year, Faculty of Science and Engineering) won the President's Award, the highest award in the invention and ingenuity category. This marks the 10th time in 11 years that the Hasuda Laboratory has won the President's Award in this category, following last year's award.

The winning entry, "AI tells you what's cooking today," is a system that aims to reduce food loss by automatically recognizing food items in the refrigerator with a camera and using AI to suggest dishes that prioritize out-of-date food items. The system can be installed in any refrigerator in the home by installing a camera on the ceiling of the refrigerator and a reed switch on the door to detect the opening and closing of the door. The acquired information is transmitted to Gemini, and the system is equipped with a voice output system that provides AI suggestions for dishes. In addition to reducing food loss, the system is expected to be effective in many other ways, such as reducing the burden of menu planning, improving household chore efficiency, and saving on food costs.
Receiving praise from his advisor, Yuichi Hasuda of the University Faculty of Science and Engineering Department of Integrated Science and Engineering Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Course Professor, Mr. Otaki expressed his joy, saying, "I am grateful to my teammates and my advisor for helping me complete this project so well in the robotics class.

Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Course will continue to promote educational and research activities that foster students' creativity and support their further success.
