On Tuesday, November 11, 2025, the seminar of Akira Pakui, Associate Professor the Department of Political Science Faculty of Law Teikyo University, donated a portion of the sales made at their stall at the Seisha Festival held in October to Variety Club, which runs a food bank in Hachioji City.
The Pakui Seminar, with its focus on disaster prevention and food sustainability, operated two stores: "Pakui Kitchen," which sold SDG bento lunches based on a slightly modified version of stockpiled dry curry, and "Pakui Cafe," which sold sustainable rusks made with stockpiled bread. Over the two days, they sold 357 SDG bento lunches and 191 sustainable rusks, providing an opportunity to convey the importance of disaster prevention and Community Engagement to many visitors. This store utilized stockpiled food provided by the Variety Club, a food bank organization in Hachioji City, and provided a practical lesson on the importance of reducing food waste and Community Engagement. In addition to deepening their understanding of the current state and importance of disaster preparedness food, a visitor survey revealed that 56.9% of participants "stockpiled more than three days' worth of food" and 86.3% "made efforts to reduce food waste." By participating in the activities, the seminar students experienced the spread of disaster prevention awareness and environmental consciousness in the local community.
These efforts have been well-received, and Pakui Kitchen won third place in the T-1 Grand Prix, a ranking of outdoor food stalls at the Seisha Festival, for the second year in a row. By donating to food banks, seminar students are deepening their practical learning about collaboration with the local community and solving social issues. Going forward, Pakui Seminar will continue to expand its distinctive role as a "seminar where students learn at the local government site" through educational practices that cross the fields of disaster prevention, welfare, and the environment.
