On Thursday, November 20, 2025, Yuto Komatsu, Associate Professor Department of Data Science Faculty of Science and Engineering Teikyo University, received the 2025 Kanto Region Invention Awards "Invention Encouragement Award" for his method for estimating brain functional areas using non-image information (Patent No. 7250279).
The Invention Award was established in 1921 with the aim of encouraging and fostering inventions in each region, and contributing to the improvement of science and technology and the promotion of local industries. Japan is divided into eight regions, and the awards recognize the achievements of those who have completed excellent inventions, devices, and designs in each region, those who have worked hard to put inventions into practice, and those who have contributed to the guidance, encouragement, and development of inventions.
This invention relates to an information processing system for estimating brain state. Improving patient motivation is a challenge in rehabilitation for patients with cerebrovascular disorders such as cerebral infarction. Therefore, it is considered desirable to provide feedback on the effectiveness of rehabilitation to patients. To provide early feedback on the effectiveness of rehabilitation to patients and medical staff, it is necessary to visualize brain state and optimize rehabilitation programs to improve the efficiency of rehabilitation. To provide feedback on the effectiveness of rehabilitation to patients and medical staff, it would be ideal to be able to grasp the details of a patient's brain state through a simple test, for example, without conducting tests such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computed tomography (CT). Therefore, we invented a method to provide an information processing system capable of estimating a subject's brain state.
We look forward to Associate Professor Komatsu's continued success in the future.
