On Thursday, August 28, 2025, 20 students from Faculty of Law and Faculty of Liberal Arts at Teikyo University, led by Professor Kanazawa Makoto of Faculty of Law, visited Aiko Girls' School (Komae City, Tokyo), a juvenile detention center for girls.
As part of our efforts to support students' independent learning, Faculty of Law regularly organizes tours of juvenile prison facilities for volunteers from each seminar.
During this tour, after receiving a detailed explanation from the legal instructor about the outline of correctional education and the operation of the facility, the students were able to actually tour the facility. Through the wide range of facilities, such as the library, gymnasium, auditorium, beauty salon, cafeteria, indoor pool, and currently unused dormitory rooms, they were able to learn about the living environment of the students and the actual educational support provided.
Regarding meals, we learned that instead of students being able to freely choose their food, the law instructors put in a lot of effort to come up with menus that take nutritional balance and tastes into consideration, and provide them with daily meals. Furthermore, students who are restricted from using their smartphones are actively reading, and the shelves lined with books recommended by library staff are a place that stimulates the students' intellectual curiosity.
During the question and answer session after the tour, many questions were asked by the students, and in particular, students aspiring to become legal instructors asked questions that delved into practical matters. The legal instructors answered each question carefully, allowing the students to deepen their understanding of the system and also experience the warm atmosphere of the workplace.
Through this visit, the students gained practical knowledge in the field of correctional education, and it was a valuable opportunity to further their understanding and interest in the profession of legal instructor.
