A research group led by Project Associate Associate Professor Shimizu Advanced Comprehensive Research Organization has identified the main components of eggshell membrane and revealed that it also has the effect of improving the intestinal environment in humans.

On Thursday, September 18, 2025, Teikyo University Advanced Comprehensive Research Organization Specially Appointed Associate Professor Miho Shimizu and Eri Fujita, Faculty of Medical Technology Department of Sport and Medical Science Senior Assistant Professor of Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, in collaboration with Junko Atomi of the Graduate School Graduate Visiting Professor School of Engineering at Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, identified the main proteins of the eggshell membrane as lysozymes by proteomic analysis. By comparing animal studies and human clinical trials at the same dosage per body weight, we have revealed for the first time that the common efficacy of both is revealed.
We have developed a method that can easily analyze pharmacokinetics by labeling previously unknown composite natural materials with tritium. This achievement is expected to lead to the development of new functional foods and medical supplements using eggshell membranes in the future.

The results of this research were published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences special issue: Cellular Mechanisms and Signaling Pathways in Normal Tissue Repair and Fibrosis (MDPI, online edition) on Thursday, September 18, 2025.
