At the 19th Japan Society of Radiology Education Academic Conference held at Kobe Tokiwa University (Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture) on Saturday, August 30, 2025, Hidemi Kamezawa, Associate Professor of the Department Department of Radiological Technology Faculty of Fukuoka Medical Technology Teikyo University, received the 2024 Outstanding Paper Award, and Haruka Matsuo (4th year student, Faculty of Fukuoka Medical Technology) and Masato Maeda (4th year student, Faculty of Fukuoka Medical Technology) presented their research.
The Outstanding Paper Award is given to the most outstanding academic paper published in the journal "Radiology Education" published by the Japanese Society of Radiology Education in 2024.
Until now, at radiological technologist training facilities that do not have a hospital attached or that do not have sufficient radiation therapy-related equipment and instruments, students have not been able to experience radiation therapy in the field until their clinical training at an external hospital, and it has been difficult to understand how the knowledge they learned in class is being used in actual clinical settings. Associate Professor Kamezawa presented a paper on the theme of "Development of a Radiation Therapy Education System Based on Virtual Reality," in which he described the development of an educational system that uses virtual reality technology to solve these issues, allowing students to learn while virtually experiencing radiation therapy facilities, equipment, and instruments.
The usefulness of the developed system in radiation therapy education, as well as its ripple effects on clinical radiology, were highly praised, leading to this award.
Matsuo and Maeda are conducting research under the guidance of Associate Professor Kamezawa and Associate Professor Keiichi Shinda of the same department, and gave presentations on the topics "Development of a Water Absorbed Dose Education System Using Cross-Reality Technology" and "Research on the Accuracy of Learning Support Tools Using Generative AI," respectively. Both presentations focused on applying the much-talked-about cross-reality technology and generative AI to medical radiology education, and many participants asked a variety of questions and made comments. The fruitful discussions revealed the two researchers' enthusiasm to further refine their research.
Teikyo University will continue to disseminate the results of its education and research to society.
