On Saturday, June 21, 2025, the Teikyo University Museum held a "Mini Fossil Excavation Experience" as a free event related to the special exhibition "Bone Wonderland - Exploring the Mysteries of Bones."
Many parents and children participated on the day, each receiving a handmade museum excavation kit. They used spatulas and skewers to carve away the fossil until it emerged. A 50-million-year-old shark tooth fossil was embedded in a plate made from a special plaster material, and after a while, a glimpse of the fossil began to emerge. The children were seen concentrating on their work as they continued to carve away the fossil, and some even asked questions to the museum assistants working as event staff about the fossils they had discovered. The idea for creating the excavation kit for this hands-on event came from the Tokai University School of Marine Science and Technology Museum, and the shark tooth fossil was provided by KASEKIYA, a global fossil retailer with offices near our university's Hachioji Campus.
This special exhibition commemorates the 10th anniversary of the opening of the museum, and brings together valuable materials owned by experts affiliated with the university who conduct research on the keyword "bone," and introduces and displays them from various angles, including the origin of bones and specimens of animal bones. The special exhibition will be held until Saturday, August 30, and related events such as lectures and experience classes are scheduled to be held from July to August. Please come and visit us.
