A student from Hachioji CampusFaculty of Law Department of Political Science was selected as a citizen committee member for Hachioji City

On Friday, May 16, 2025, the first Child Welfare Specialist Subcommittee meeting of 2025 was held in Hachioji City, and Mairin Saito (2nd year student, Faculty of Law), who was selected as a citizen committee member of the Social Welfare Council's Child Welfare Specialist Subcommittee, attended and participated in the deliberations.
The Child Welfare Specialist Subcommittee of the Social Welfare Council, established based on a Hachioji City ordinance, is recruiting citizen committee members to participate in its deliberations in order to reflect a wide range of perspectives. After a document review and interview selection process, Saito was selected as a member of this subcommittee, which will specialize in the areas of child, child-rearing, and youth support, for two years from 2025 to 2026.

This subcommittee is made up of members who are academic experts and representatives of various organizations, as well as citizen members, and as the only student member, Saito is expected to make statements that utilize the perspective of young people. At the first meeting, although he was nervous, he spoke clearly about his concerns and showed a proactive attitude, making this an example of how the knowledge he gained in university classes can be put to use in the field of policy formation.
Saito said, "At the first meeting, I once again realized how difficult it is to keep up with the discussions and the weight of the responsibility that comes with being a committee member. I will do my best to bring the perspective that I have as a university student to be of some use in the deliberations at future meetings."

The main topic of discussion at the next subcommittee meeting and beyond will be the progress management of the Hachioji City Children and Youth Development Support Plan, and we are looking forward to seeing Mr. Saito, who represents the younger generation, make great contributions in areas such as measures to combat the declining birthrate and supporting young people.
