On Monday, May 12, 2025, Teikyo University became the first university in the Kanto region to be certified as a "Japan Heritage Supporter University" by the Agency for Cultural Affairs. Professor Konno Hisako Department of Human Cultures Teikyo University Junior College College and three students from Department of Tourism Management the Faculty Faculty of Economics, who were involved in the activities that led to the university's registration, attended the Hachioji Mayor's press conference on Monday, June 2.
Under this system, the Agency for Cultural Affairs registers, upon recommendation by the council, higher education institutions that actively engage in educational and research activities that utilize the region's Japan Heritage sites in collaboration with the council of the designated Japan Heritage sites. Our university is the eighth school in the country to be registered.
Professor Konno's "Special Tourism Management Lectures" in Department of Tourism Management, Faculty Faculty of Economics incorporates the story of Hachioji City's Japan Heritage, "Mt. Takao, a Mountain Full of Spiritual Energy - The Tale of Mulberry City, woven by the Prayers of the People." In collaboration with the Hachioji City Japan Heritage Promotion Division (Secretariat of the Japan Heritage "Mulberry City Tale" Promotion Council), the Hachioji Textile Industrial Association, and shared kitchens in Hachioji, the school has planned and organized a variety of events to encourage young people to take an interest in local culture, such as the "Mulberry City Hachioji Quiz Sugoroku," which was planned and produced by students, the development of an original sweet, "Mulberry Leaf Pudding," and a hand-weaving experience event led by a traditional craftsman.
"Mulberry City Hachioji Quiz Sugoroku" has been presented as a teaching material to all 69 elementary schools in the city, and based on this track record, the Japan Heritage "Mulberry City Story" Promotion Council applied to our university to be certified as a "Japan Heritage Supporter University" by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, and our university was subsequently approved.
This year, Professor Konno will continue to work with Hachioji city to create a sustainable town that makes use of the "mulberry city" and "textiles" through initiatives such as creating an improved version of the board game, hosting events, and raising awareness of the importance of eating mulberry fruit while walking around.
Teikyo University will continue to provide Practical learning education outlined in Educational Guidelines.
