Lecturer Kusakabe and his colleagues at Itabashi CampusSenior Assistant Professor presented the results of an educational program using the medical support experience on the Diamond Princess as teaching material.

On Friday, May 16, 2025, Yoshio Kusakabe, Senior Assistant Professor the Department of Pharmacy, Faculty Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Teikyo Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Yasuhiro Nakamura, Assistant Professor in the same department, presented the results of an educational program that used the medical support experience on the Diamond Princess as teaching material. The results were published in the international medical education journal "BMC Medical Education" (Springer Nature).
This educational program utilizes as teaching materials the actual experiences of medical support provided on the Diamond Princess cruise ship, which attracted global attention for its response to COVID-19. Based on actual cases handled by Senior Assistant Professor Kusakabe, students are encouraged to think independently about the ethical dilemmas faced by medical professionals in disaster and infectious disease situations, learning from multiple perspectives through group discussions. Furthermore, because medication instructions must be given in English, students also engage in exercises to create medication instructions in English, deepening their understanding of the need for English proficiency and the risks associated with the clinical application of AI. Through these program initiatives, we aim to foster the ethics and professionalism required of medical professionals.
This paper has attracted attention both domestically and internationally as an advanced initiative that transforms valuable real-life experiences in disaster medical care into education, and is expected to serve as a new model case for pharmaceutical education.

Our university's Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences offers practical education like this program through its "Medical Communication I" class, and its unique methods, such as mock medication instruction using tablet-shaped snacks and ethics education using documentary television programs, have been highly praised in domestic academic journals.
Our university will continue to share the latest research results and provide an even more fulfilling learning environment.
