Professor Masaki Sugimoto of the Innovation Lab Okinaga Research Institute of Teikyo University gave invited lectures at UAE University (United Arab Emirates) on Monday, May 26, 2025, and at one of the Middle East's largest summits on Tuesday, May 27, 2025.
On Monday, May 26th, I was invited to give a talk entitled "Augmented Holographic Surgical Navigation Using Extended Reality" at "Future Tech Talks: Healthcare and Education in the Digital Age" held by the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU).
The lecture provided an overview of surgical support systems using XR technology, as well as a multifaceted discussion of its applications in education and remote support, as well as its contribution to reducing environmental impact. Participants particularly highlighted the spatial hologram display developed by Holoeyes Inc., a venture company spun off from Teikyo University, which allows for intuitive understanding of organ shape and surgical planning, prompting lively Q&A sessions. Furthermore, a demonstration and hands-on session of an XR service developed as a result of joint research with the company was held, introducing participants to the potential of cutting-edge spatial computing technology for preoperative planning and intraoperative support. The event attracted faculty, students, and medical professionals from the university's School of Medicine, as well as multiple faculties including Engineering, Information Science, and Education, who gathered to share many insights into the future of digital medicine and education.
On Tuesday, May 27, I was invited to speak at the Arab Media Summit 2025 (AMS2025) held at the Dubai World Trade Center, where I gave a speech titled "A Japanese Vision for the Future of Media." This forum, sponsored by the Government of Dubai, is one of the Middle East's largest media events, bringing together over 6,000 media professionals to discuss the future of journalism, digital content, and communications. The program featured world-renowned editors and influencers from CNN, Reuters, Arab News, and other media companies. During my speech, I discussed methods for building data-driven, personalized media strategies using AI, media applications of 3D hologram technology developed through medical XR and the metaverse, the potential of spatial interactive content fused with AI technology, and my vision for co-creation-based innovation collaboration with media companies and universities in the Middle East.
After his lecture, Professor Sugimoto commented, "As the boundaries between media and healthcare rapidly dissolve, the idea of 'spatializing information' using AI and XR is the key to next-generation media. I will leverage the network I gained at AMS to create new content experiences with partners in the Middle East." He also spoke about his future outlook, saying, "I will further deepen my collaboration with medical and educational institutions in the Middle East, including the UAEU, and aim to realize a safer and more sustainable medical environment. I will also promote international collaborative research using AI and XR technology, contributing to solving social issues and creating new value." We look forward to Professor Sugimoto's future success.
