Itabashi CampusA research group led by Professor Shibata of the Department Internal Medicine at Teikyo University School of Medicine has discovered the mechanism by which metabolic syndrome and genes affect uric acid levels.

On Friday, May 16, 2025, a research group led by Shigeru Shibata, Professor of the Department Internal Medicine at Teikyo University School of Medicine, and Wataru Fujii, Special Assistant Professor Advanced Comprehensive Research Organization, in collaboration with Yuta Takachi, Professor at the Institute for Intractable Diseases, Graduate School of Science, Tokyo University of Science, clarified the mechanism by which serum uric acid levels tend to rise with obesity and the role of genes as a factor in constitution (gene-environment interaction).

The results of this study were published in The Journal of Clinical Investigation on Thursday, May 15, 2025.
