On Saturday, May 10, 2025, Junya Fukui, Associate Professor the Department of Japanese Cultures Faculty of Liberal Arts Teikyo University, demonstrated his calligraphy at the "Friendship Connected by Brush and Ink - Japan-China Calligraphy Exchange Event," held in the China Pavilion Multifunctional Hall as part of the cultural events of the "Beijing Week" at the Osaka-Kansai Expo. This event was planned as a place for cultural dialogue mediated by the art of calligraphy through on-site calligraphy by representative calligraphers from both Japan and China.
Associate Professor Fukui, who participated as a representative of Japanese calligraphers, first wrote a spring poem by Masaoka Shiki, "The sea in spring, lights shine on the islands," in large characters on the entire sheet of paper. In addition, seven representative calligraphers from Japan and China, a total of 14 people, each took charge of one character to create a Chinese poem, and Associate Professor Fukui was in charge of the character "kore."
At the subsequent discussion session, Mr. Xue Jian, Consul General of the People's Republic of China in Osaka, asked Associate Professor Fukui specific questions about Japanese kana calligraphy. Consul General Xue expressed deep interest in the shape and brushwork of kana, which has developed uniquely despite being in the Chinese character culture sphere, making this a very symbolic moment of exchange as a dialogue between the writing cultures of the two countries.
