Associate Professor Fukui demonstrates his calligraphy at the Japan-China calligraphy exchange event at the Osaka-Kansai Expo

On Saturday, May 10, 2025, Associate Professor Atsuya Fukui of Department of Japanese Cultures Faculty of Liberal Arts, Teikyo University, demonstrated his calligraphy at the "Friendship Connected by Brush and Ink - Japan-China Calligraphy Exchange Event," held in the China Pavilion Multifunctional Hall as part of the cultural events of the "Beijing Week" at the Osaka-Kansai Expo. This event was planned as a forum for cultural dialogue mediated by the art of calligraphy, with calligraphy performances by leading calligraphers from both Japan and China.
Associate Professor Fukui, who participated as a representative of Japanese calligraphers, began by writing a spring poem by Masaoka Shiki, "The spring sea, lights are lit on the islands," in large characters across the entire page. In addition, seven representative calligraphers from Japan and China, a total of 14 people, each responsible for one character, collaborated to create a Chinese poem, in which Associate Professor Fukui was responsible for the character "kore."
At the subsequent social gathering, Mr. Xue Jian, Consul General of the People's Republic of China in Osaka, asked Associate Professor Fukui specific questions about Japanese kana calligraphy. Consul General Xue expressed deep interest in the unique shape and brushwork of kana, which has developed independently despite being in the Chinese character culture sphere, making this a highly symbolic moment of exchange as a dialogue between the writing cultures of the two countries.
