The 8th "Creating a Safe Nation" event was held at Teikyo University's Kasumigaseki Campus on Saturday, February 1, 2025. This was an extracurricular event for the "Improving Questioning Skills" class currently being held at the university's Hachioji Campus. Each time, a guest speaker is invited to hold a workshop where participants discuss various social issues in Japan in order to find solutions.
This time, the guest speaker was Hiroomi Ishiwata of the National Institute for Defense Studies, Ministry of Defense, who gave a lecture entitled "Worst-case scenarios surrounding Japan." He gave an overview of Japan's defense and European security, drawing on his experience working for the Self-Defense Forces and the Japanese government's mission to NATO. Afterwards, students gave presentations on topics related to the following discussion, such as the possibility of a Taiwan emergency and the current situation regarding the Senkaku Islands, which are becoming increasingly tense.
After each presentation, the participants (21 in total, including nine students, three faculty members, and nine working adults) divided into seven countries—Japan, the United States, China, Russia, South South Korea, the United Kingdom, and France—to conduct a Model United Nations (MUN) exercise. Lively discussion ensued, with participants expressing their support, opposition, or abstention regarding a proposed resolution urging all countries to exercise self-restraint in military action to prevent further deterioration of the situation surrounding Taiwan. Mr. Ishiwata commented, "Watching everyone's free and open discussion today, I believe this growing interest in security will be a driving force in making Japan a safer country."
The "Creating a Safe Nation" activities are run by student volunteers, and past activities can be viewed below.
