Hachioji CampusStudents and faculty from the Department of Department of Sport and Medical Science Faculty of Medical Technology, participated as first aid volunteers in the Yokohama Marathon 2024

On Sunday, October 27, 2024, 33 students from the Department of Sport and Medical Science of Faculty of Medical Technology Teikyo University, and Senior Assistant Professor Akihide Yamamoto from the same department participated as the first responder volunteers at the Yokohama Marathon 2024, held in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture. The Yokohama Marathon is a full marathon, and this year marks its 10th anniversary. Our department has been participating as first responder volunteers since the first year, with 14 students continuing to participate.
The FR medical volunteer team was divided into pairs and positioned along the marathon course under the direction of a team leader armed with an AED. They kept an eye on the safety of the race participants and dealt with numerous cases of dehydration and leg cramps. Yuma Segami (2nd year, Faculty of Medical Technology), who participated in this year's medical volunteer program, commented, "Participating as a medical volunteer at the Yokohama Marathon, I witnessed the runners' hard work and enthusiasm, and once again realized the importance of cheering and supporting them. In particular, from the perspective of a medical volunteer, I had the opportunity to deal with runners who became ill or injured during the marathon, which required quick and calm action. I felt that it was important to be able to make quick decisions and provide appropriate treatment in a tense atmosphere. I also learned the importance of cooperation and communication between volunteers, fire departments, and doctors. I realized that working as a team leads to the safety and security of runners. This experience allowed me to hone skills that will be useful in my future work and daily life, and I believe that the ability to make calm judgments, the ability to respond flexibly according to the situation, and the importance of cooperation will be useful in any situation. I felt happy to be able to help someone through this medical activity, and I would definitely like to participate again if the opportunity arises."
We expect the students to grow even more through their experience in practical relief activities.
