At the 2024 Japanese Society of Limnology National Conference, held at the Faculty of Science, Kumamoto University from Friday, October 18th to Sunday, October 20th, 2024, Shuhei Yamaguchi (4th year, Faculty of Science and Engineering) gave a research presentation and won the Outstanding Presentation Award.
Yamaguchi, a member of the Department of Information and Electronic Engineering in the Faculty of Science Faculty of Science and Engineering at our university, has been working since September 2023 under Professor Hasuda Yuichi of the same faculty on the construction and analysis of an aquatic organism ecological observation system using artificial intelligence (AI), and presented his findings under the title "Analysis of the behavior of giant white mayfly larvae in their burrows using AI." The ecology of giant white mayfly larvae, which live in unique U-shaped burrows in the bottom of rapid-flowing rivers, remained a mystery for 100 years since the new species was described in 1924. However, using a small observation robot equipped with an infrared camera developed by Yamaguchi, the ecological behavior of the larvae, such as movement and feeding, was captured on video for the first time in the world.
This presentation received praise from researchers across the country for its cross-disciplinary application of AI and robotics, and during the question and answer session, the robot carefully answered questions about its behavior within the burrow, demonstrating the high level of development potential and quality of our university's robotics and AI research.
We have high expectations for Yamaguchi's future success.
