On Friday, September 6, 2024, eight international students from Teikyo University's TAEP (Teikyo University Asia Exchange Program) visited the Supreme Court and met with Justice Oka Masaaki. TAEP is a program established at Hachioji Campus with the aim of cultivating human resources who will contribute to the development of Japan and the Asian region. It currently has agreements with universities in seven Southeast Asian countries and accepts international students. Southeast Asia has achieved steady development, but also faces a variety of challenges. A reliable judicial system, however, is crucial for stable politics and economic growth. This visit gave the international students an opportunity to get a firsthand look at Japan's judicial system.
The visit was made possible thanks to the fact that Justice Oka of the Supreme Court was a classmate of Professor Yoshiya Seto of the Faculty Faculty of Economics at our university, who teaches international business at TAEP. Professor Seto consulted with Justice Oka, who kindly kindly agreed to make the visit possible.
On the day, eight international students visited the school, accompanied by Professor Seto, who acted as their guide and interpreter. Guided by Judge Oka's personal secretary, Kashiwagi, they toured the Supreme Court's Grand Courtroom and other facilities, and listened to a staff member explain the library's functions and roles at the Supreme Court. Finally, they had a chat with Judge Oka. The international students asked questions about the challenges facing Japan's judicial system and the mindset required for legal professionals, and Judge Oka answered each one carefully.
The TAEP students had the rare opportunity to experience the atmosphere inside the Supreme Court and talk with a current Supreme Court justice, which was a valuable opportunity to broaden their horizons.
