On Thursday, August 22, 2024, a research group led by Professor Shinji Yamaguchi and Assistant Professor Toshiyuki Fujita of the Teikyo University Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences discovered that the soxC gene promotes organ regeneration using the earthworm Yamatohime, a species with a high regenerative capacity. They also discovered that cells expressing the soxC gene (soxC cells) accumulate at the amputated ends of organs in both the earthworm Yamatohime and Xenopus frogs. Since soxC cells are thought to be responsible for the early events of organ regeneration across animal species, and the soxC gene is also present in humans, these findings are expected to provide new insights into new drug discovery and regenerative medicine in the future.
The results of this research were published in the journal Nature Communications.
