Hachioji CampusMind Journeys Unleashed: Flipping Classrooms and Shaping Futures at Hachioji Campus with Teikyology

In a dynamic move toward fostering collaboration and dialogue among prospective educators, Teikyo University's Hachioji Campus played host to a unique shout-out event on Thursday, December 14, 2023. The gathering was a convergence of students who had successfully navigated the 2023 teacher recruitment examination and those gearing up for the challenge in the upcoming year.

Stepping into the new year, on Saturday, January 6, 2024, the Hachioji Campus witnessed the unfolding of the "Interdisciplinary Course of Teikyology," a preparatory education initiative tailored for students accepted into the university through comprehensive selection and school recommendation channels. At the core of this initiative was a flipped classroom, an innovative teaching approach gaining traction in academic circles. Led by Professor Hiroshi Uta from the University's General Education Center, the event saw the participation of approximately 40 high school students. After an insightful introductory lecture, the students, organized into small groups, undertook the responsibility of selecting group names, leaders, and secretaries.

The crux of the flipped classroom model came alive as each group delved into a class video titled "What we learn through university sports," presented by Professor Masayuki Iwade, Deputy Head of the University's Medical Science Center. Following this, the students engaged in vibrant discussions around the central theme: "What is dialogue?" The outcome of these discussions was visually captured on whiteboards, where students penned down their thoughts and opinions. The day concluded with each group presenting their findings, a session graced by the presence of Chairman and President Yoshihito Okinaga, who also served as a judge. In his reflections, Okinaga emphasized the profound impact of listening to diverse opinions, highlighting the role of such discussions in shaping a nuanced understanding of complex societal issues.

One student echoed this sentiment, stating, "There is nothing you can do to learn more than listening to other people's opinions. It is important to acquire knowledge through textbooks, but participating in discussions like this, visiting various places, and meeting people repeatedly will enable you to interpret difficult social issues in your own way and develop the ability to think of solutions." Participants spoke of the transformative nature of the event, with one student expressing how the class alleviated pre-enrollment anxieties. Another participant remarked on the positive impact on interpersonal communication, stating, "It was an opportunity to deepen our friendships and realize that we are going to be university students." Teikyo University's commitment to nurturing dialogue and critical thinking was vividly exemplified through this event, offering a glimpse into the innovative methods employed to prepare students for the multifaceted challenges of higher education.
