Hachiouji CampusOkinaga Award Ceremony Highlights Cutting-Edge Research in Medical Mycology

In a celebration marking the 40th anniversary of Teikyo University's Medical Mycology Research Center, the inaugural Teikyo University Institute of Medical Mycology Okinaga Award Ceremony took place at the Hachioji Campus on Saturday, December 9, 2023. This event, steeped in the rich history of the center, honored individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the field.Established as a continuation of the esteemed "Hiratani Tamio Memorial Award," the Okinaga Award is dedicated to those who have displayed unwavering dedication to their studies at the center. The award recognizes researchers who have demonstrated outstanding achievements in the realm of medical mycology.During the award selection meeting on November 8, 2023, two exceptional individuals stood out. Takako Nakayama, a researcher at the Chiba Prefectural Institute of Health, and Chiaki Yamanishi, director of the Hirakata Comprehensive Developmental Medical Center, were both honored for their remarkable contributions.

At the ceremony, Professor Koichi Makimura, Deputy Head of the Medical Mycology Research Center, unveiled the results of the rigorous selection process and provided insightful commentary. Head of the Center, Vice President, and Executive Director Hiroko Okinaga then presented certificates, plaques, and supplementary awards to the deserving recipients. Dr. Nakayama, recognized for her groundbreaking work in medical mycology, has significantly advanced the field through her research on detecting indoor environmental fungi using the LAMP method. On the other hand, Dr. Yamanishi has charted new territory with his research on phylogenetic markers for major pathogenic fungi, based on the amino acid sequence of the largest subunit of RNA polymerase I.

This prestigious award not only reflects the proud culture and tradition of Teikyo University's Institute of Medical Mycology but also plays a vital role in inspiring and supporting researchers dedicated to this field. Moving forward, the university remains committed to honoring outstanding contributors, ensuring the continued advancement of medical mycology.
