Itabashi CampusMedical Students Bridge Borders in Vientiane: A Lesson in Lifesaving

In an extraordinary display of international cooperation, the Faculty of Medical Technology from Teikyo University recently participated in the 3rd Paramedic Training Program in Vientiane, Laos. This program, a part of JICA's grassroots technical cooperation project, aimed to enhance pre-hospital relief efforts in the Lao People's Democratic Republic. Guided by Yusuke Takayama, Senior Assistant Professor in the Department of Sport and Medical Science's Emergency Medical Technician Course, along with ten dedicated students, the delegation embarked on this transformative journey from August 6th to the 12th.
Laos relies heavily on volunteer groups for patient transportation via ambulance. These groups primarily consist of individuals from the same generation as the students who joined them. Through this exchange, our Teikyo students not only shared invaluable knowledge and skills but also learned from their Laotian counterparts. One of the most remarkable aspects of this program was the ingenious use of real-time translation technology, which proved instrumental in breaking down the language barrier that often plagues such international collaborations.
This initiative represents a significant milestone in the education of our university's students. By immersing themselves in diverse and international settings, they are not only mastering crucial skills but also cultivating a global perspective that promises to serve them well beyond their time in Japan. The impact of this experience is sure to resonate within our students, shaping them into more globally aware and culturally sensitive healthcare professionals. Teikyo University's foray into international medical cooperation stands as a testament to the power of cross-border collaboration in advancing the field of medical technology.
