Itabashi CampusNursing Department Pioneers Innovative Simulation Exercise for Future Healthcare Professionals

May 25th, 2023. In a groundbreaking initiative, third-year students from the Department of Nursing at Teikyo University's Faculty of Medical Technology recently undertook a "Mock Pre-Discharge Conference" at the Itabashi Campus. This interdisciplinary case study exercise, held on May 25th and 30th, 2023, aimed to equip future nurses with the skills needed to ease the concerns of both patients and their families during the transition from hospital care to home-based support. The students leveraged a cutting-edge simulation education web system named TCC (Teikyo Co-Lab City) in tandem with the educational electronic medical record, Medi-EYE (manufactured by Medi-LX). Through this digital platform, accessible via computers, tablets, and smartphones, participants gathered crucial information about hospitalized patients, their families, visiting nurses, and care managers. This immersive experience allowed students to gain insights into current situations and anticipated support needs.

The exercise began with an in-depth study of a case patient's journey, spanning from pre-hospitalization to their time within the hospital. Subsequently, students transitioned their focus towards community/home care nursing, assuming the roles of both care managers and nurses, preparing for the patient's eventual return home. This dynamic approach to learning emphasized the importance of decision-making support by visiting nurses. During the May 25th session, students assumed various roles, including "patients", "family members", "ward nurses", "discharge support nurses", "visiting nurses", and "care managers", each contributing their expertise towards the pre-discharge conference. Subsequently, participants formed specialized groups based on their designated roles, allowing for a deep dive into specific tasks. In the latter part of the exercise, students reconvened to share their findings, ultimately crafting a comprehensive mock pre-discharge conference scenario.

On May 30th, within a training room meticulously designed to emulate a hospital conference setting, two groups presented their simulated pre-discharge conferences based on the scenarios they developed. Post-presentation, a lively exchange of ideas ensued, focusing on the strengths observed in the presentations, as well as identifying commonalities and disparities between the scenarios. This innovative exercise seamlessly melds two critical nursing domains - adult nursing and community/home nursing. By immersing themselves in the simulated pre-discharge conference, students gained invaluable practical experience in the continuum of care required for patients and their families transitioning back to their daily lives post-hospitalization. This initiative marks a significant step forward in the evolution of nursing education at Teikyo University, promising a more compassionate and seamless healthcare journey for patients and their families.

This exercise is an attempt to cross-sectionally combine exercises in two areas of nursing: adult nursing and community/home nursing. Through the simulated pre-discharge conference, it was an opportunity to practically learn the continuous nursing care necessary for patients and their families who are transitioning to their daily lives.
