Itabashi CampusProfessor Junichi Kotoku Leads Breakthrough in Heart Failure Prediction Using AI from Chest X-rays

In a collaborative effort, Teikyo University Graduate School's Division of Clinical Radiology, led by Professor Junichi Kotoku, together with Tokushima University Cardiology experts, Senior Assistant Professor Kenya Kusunose and Professors Masataka Sada, has unveiled a cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) capable of assessing the likelihood of heart failure from chest X-ray images. Impressively, the AI system surpasses the accuracy of specialist evaluations when it comes to estimating pathology and prognosis. Chest X-rays, a cornerstone of medical checkups, hold tremendous potential for widespread application, particularly in regions grappling with limited medical resources. This innovation opens up new avenues for utilization in remote and underserved areas, including distant islands where specialized medical expertise may be scarce. These groundbreaking findings have been featured in the prestigious international English journal, Frontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine, signifying a significant leap forward in medical technology.
