Itabashi CampusProfessor Atsushi Yamashita Leads Pioneering Discovery in Cell Mediation

On May 16, 2023 (Tuesday), In a collaborative effort, leading scientists from Teikyo University, Kawasaki Medical School, Kagawa University, and Tokushima University, made a significant breakthrough on Tuesday. Professor Atsushi Yamashita, along with esteemed colleagues, uncovered the pivotal role of glycerophosphodiesterase 7 (GDE7), an enzyme of the lysophospholipase D-type, in generating cyclic phosphatidic acid (cPA), a crucial lipid mediator found within the endoplasmic reticulum of cells. This remarkable discovery opens new doors in our understanding of cPA, which is believed to play a crucial role in the malignant progression of breast cancer and adipocyte differentiation. The implications of this research extend far beyond the lab, with potential therapeutic avenues for breast cancer and obesity on the horizon. The groundbreaking findings have been published in the esteemed international academic journal, Communications Biology, heralding a new era in the fight against these prevalent health challenges.
