Hachioji CampusProf. Ukai Unveils Enchanting 'The World of Amélie' Exhibition

Teikyo University's Faculty of Language Studies Department of Language Studies, under the guidance of Senior Assistant Professor Atsuko Ukai, invites visitors on a captivating journey through the "The World of Amélie" exhibition, running from April 21 to June 20, 2023, at the Teikyo University Museum. In this unique showcase, students who faced setbacks in their study abroad plans due to the global pandemic share their profound insights into French culture, all inspired by the timeless film "Amélie," directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet and released in 2001. Despite initial skepticism, the film achieved remarkable success, offering a heartwarming glimpse into the life of a whimsical woman navigating the enchanting streets of Paris.

The exhibit, presented in seven panels, delves into various facets of the film, including "Perfume," "Roof," "Spiral Staircase," "Photograph Machine," "Cafe," "Phone Booths," and "Proverbs." Among the treasures on display is a candy can, a cherished artifact from the movie, alongside a space for visitors to share their impressions. Setting up this exhibition was no small feat, as one student reflected, "It was fascinating to sift through the university's collection for artwork that resonated with the ambiance of Amélie. However, during the installation phase, maneuvering two-meter tall paintings from the storehouse's upper tier required six of us, proving quite the challenge." Senior Assistant Professor Ukai, overseeing the project, shared her creative process, stating, "Initially, I experimented with various computer-generated prototypes, but none captured the essence of Amélie's world. Opting for a hand-drawn approach resulted in a visually striking and authentically crafted outcome." The exhibition space, enhanced by the students' impromptu idea of arranging posters in a cinematic fashion and adding hand-painted touches, exudes an atmosphere perfectly aligned with Amélie's unique worldview. Visitors are encouraged to immerse themselves in this captivating display of creativity and cultural exploration. As an added treat, guests can relive the magic through the trailer of "Amélie," originally released in Japan in 2001. Don't miss this opportunity to experience the allure of "The World of Amélie" at Teikyo University Museum.
