Hachioji CampusTeikyo University Karate Club Triumphs at the 59th East Japan University Karatedo Championship

In a thrilling showcase of martial arts prowess, the Teikyo University Karatedo Club displayed their dominance as they clinched the Women's Group Kumite Championship at the 59th East Japan University Karatedo Championship. This remarkable achievement was celebrated on Friday, May 5, 2023, at the prestigious Nippon Budokan in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo. The championship event, which brought together universities from the Hokkaido, Tohoku, Kanto, Hokushinetsu, and Tokai regions, marked a significant milestone as it allowed a live audience to bear witness to the intense competition. The Teikyo University women's team, with unwavering determination, secured their 13th consecutive victory and the 13th title in the tournament's history. The stands were filled with proud parents, alumni, and karate enthusiasts, all witnessing a display of true excellence.

Even the first-year students, newly initiated into the university, proved their mettle, performing with such poise that it belied their rookie status. Their remarkable composure throughout the tournament left onlookers in awe. In the grand finale, the team's performance remained steadfast and dependable. In contrast, the men's group kumite experienced a significant overhaul in its roster, with many students participating in group competition for the very first time. The outcome was met with mixed results. Director and instructor of the university's karate club, Masao Kagawa, commented on the performance, noting, "The girls demonstrated a perfect fighting style, with the first-year students' stellar performances complementing the stability of the senior students. For the boys, it's evident that more work is needed, especially with the complete change in team members."

A new team, primarily comprising fourth-year students, inherited the legacy of their senior counterparts who had previously secured victory at the All Japan University Karatedo Championships. As they move forward, expectations run high for the team to further bolster their strength through upcoming Kanto and All Japan individual competitions. The next team showdown is slated for October, and the university's karate enthusiasts eagerly anticipate the emergence of new talent and the continued growth of the team. As the Teikyo University Karate Club continues its pursuit of excellence, they humbly request the warm support of their fans and the broader community. This triumphant victory serves as a testament to the unwavering dedication and talent within the Teikyo University Karatedo Club, and their journey is one that promises to captivate us all in the months and years to come.
