Hachioji CampusUnique Language and Culture Program Embarks with 37 International Japanese Studies Students

On April 2, 2023, 37 second-year international students from the Faculty of Foreign Languages, Department of Global Japanese Studies, set off for a language and cultural training program at our partner institutions, Shiga University and Shimane University. This program, a distinctive feature of our department established in 2022, aims to equip students with advanced language communication skills and a deep understanding of intercultural dynamics. During the first semester of their second year, which spans approximately four months, Japanese students undertake their training abroad, while international students engage in intensive study at domestic partner institutions. This affords them the opportunity to step out of Tokyo and delve into culture-specific subjects that are unique to each locale, gaining valuable insights into the diversity of Japan through participation in local cultural events and exposure to regional industries.

Orientation sessions at each university provided an overview of the courses offered and facilitated introductions between participating students and their assigned tutor students. The tutors shared insights on adapting to life in an environment different from Tokyo, highlighted climate variations, and introduced nearby tourist attractions and seasonal festivities. As a result, participating students were eager to embark on their new university life with enthusiasm. This program not only benefits Japanese students attending Shiga and Shimane Universities but also fosters an environment for cross-cultural exchange with students from various countries. By engaging in this dynamic learning environment, participants are poised to gain fresh perspectives and deepen their understanding of Japan, enriching their academic journey.
