Hachioji CampusEngaging Fieldwork Explores North Daito Island's Rich History and Natural Beauty

Students from Teikyo University's Department of Language Studies engaged in a transformative fieldwork experience on North Daito Island, located in the Shimajiri District of Okinawa Prefecture. The initiative was part of the "Interdisciplinary Exercises" curriculum, which emphasizes learning through hands-on experiences, going beyond the confines of traditional classroom instruction. This year's theme, "Movement of People, Objects, and Information," guided the exploration, with a special focus on the unique characteristics of both the southern and northern regions of Daito Island. The students were privileged to receive insightful lectures at the "Ufugari Museum of People and Nature," delving into the island's history and distinctive landscapes. Following the lecture, guided by Mr. Hanada, an expert from the North Daito Island Development Organization, the group visited remnants of the former phosphate mining site, which once stood as a cornerstone of the island's economy. Although now harmoniously integrated into the natural surroundings, fragments of pottery vessels believed to have stored drinking water serve as poignant reminders of the bygone era when phosphate mining thrived in this very location. The exploration continued as students embarked on a bicycle tour of the island, uncovering various historical remnants related to the phosphate mining industry and witnessing the bustling sugarcane harvest, which plays a vital role in today's economy of North Daito Island. As night fell, a rare and remarkable experience awaited, as students had the privilege of observing the protected species, the Daito Fruit Bat, designated as a natural monument. This immersive fieldwork not only deepened the students' understanding of North Daito Island's rich heritage but also provided them with invaluable, first-hand experiences that transcend the boundaries of conventional learning.
