Hachioji CampusTeikyo University Celebrates Outstanding Achievements in Education: Honoring Excellence and Dedication

Teikyo University's Hachioji Campus was aglow with commendations on February 20, 2023, as the Faculty of Education celebrated its seventh annual awards ceremony for the academic year 2022. Instituted in 2016, this recognition system applauds outstanding achievements and high acclaim in fields encompassing academia, sports, culture, and welfare among enrolled students. This year, the spotlight shone on the International Exchange field with a group accolade for the Kyoko Nakayama Seminar, and individual accolades were conferred upon two exceptional students: Mr. Kento Haruta (Faculty of Education, Year 2) for sporting endeavors, and Mr. Riku Tamura (Faculty of Education, Year 4) for extracurricular activities.

In the Kyoko Nakayama Seminar, six students — Mr. Sen Yo (Faculty of Education, Year 4), Ms. Saki Kitabaya (Faculty of Education, Year 4), Mr. Riku Tamura (Faculty of Education, Year 4), Ms. Momona Inoue (Faculty of Education, Year 4), Ms. Rira Nishimura (Faculty of Education, Year 4), and Ms. Reo Tanaka (Faculty of Education, Year 4) — garnered well-deserved recognition. Their participation as Japan's representatives in the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Centre of Education for International Understanding's collaborative project, "Advancing International Understanding and Global Citizenship Education through Storytelling in Northeast Asia," earned them acclaim from the Korean Society for International Understanding Education, a pivotal organization in the field. Recipients expressed their sentiments, with one stating, "I am delighted that our eight months of collaborative efforts in the seminar have been acknowledged in this manner. Even as I embark on a career in education, I aim to continue my pursuit of international understanding education and venture into various challenges in the future." Others shared their experiences of learning about the contrasting atmospheres in elementary schools between China and Japan. In the individual awards category, Mr. Kento Haruta, an integral player in the U23 Japanese national wheelchair basketball team, was selected. His remarkable performances, including receiving the "JWBF Chairman's Special Award" and being named among the "All-Star 5" at the 2022 TOYOTA U25 Japan Wheelchair Basketball Championship, earned him this accolade. Mr. Haruta affirmed his determination to train rigorously, aiming for success at the 2024 Paris and 2028 Los Angeles Paralympics. He remarked, "While I achieved a gold medal at last year's World Championships in Phuket, Thailand, I still feel that I haven't achieved my full potential. I am practicing with the goal of making a mark at the upcoming Paralympic Games." The Director of Teikyo University's Sports Bureau, Mr. Masayuki Iwade, who recommended Mr. Haruta, added, "He actively engages in sports organizations both on and off-campus while pursuing his education in the teaching program. His journey thus far has been a testament to his dedication, not only physically and mentally but also technically through various training regimens. We hope he will become a positive influence and source of energy for many in society."

The second individual awardee, Mr. Riku Tamura, played a pivotal role as the leader in launching the "Talk Show" project under the student organization "Campus Life Tutors" at the Hachioji Campus. His contributions to outreach activities targeting high school students were highly praised. Mr. Tamura shared, "Through my involvement in Campus Life Tutors, I gained invaluable experiences. Additionally, I had the opportunity to visit high schools and directly engage with students, offering advice based on my own university experiences." Recommender from the Hachioji Campus Admissions Group, a staff member, expressed, "Regardless of the environment, Mr. Tamura takes on challenges ambitiously. He transcends the boundaries of faculties, departments, and years, earning admiration for his bright and proactive approach to Campus Life Tutor activities. We recommended him with the hope that he will continue to excel in his unique way." These laureates' accomplishments serve as a testament to the diverse talents and unwavering commitment of Teikyo University's Faculty of Education students. Their dedication to their respective fields showcases the university's ethos of fostering holistic education and community engagement. The university community looks forward to witnessing their future endeavors and contributions to society.
