Hachioji CampusEmbracing Diversity: Students Engage in Collaborative Seminar on Gender Sociology

On Saturday, December 3, 2022, students from the Department of Sociology at Teikyo University's Faculty of Liberal Arts participated in a collaborative seminar on "Gender Sociology" organized by the non-profit organization ReBit and Starbucks Coffee Japan Co., Ltd. Instructed by Professor Shingo Kukimoto, the course aims to foster an understanding of the current diversity in "gender" and to envision the future societal and institutional perspectives surrounding "gender."

Starbucks, known for its commitment to diversity, runs the "Rainbow School Project," wherein proceeds from the sale of products featuring rainbow motifs are donated to ReBit. During this session, our students delved into the fundamental knowledge of diverse genders under the theme, "What is the nature of diverse sexuality? Striving for a society that embraces differences." They explored personal narratives and strategies for valuing "differences" in sexuality. The act of disclosing one's sexuality to others, known as "coming out," was discussed, and a guest speaker shared, "Through coming out, I felt an incredible power in being acknowledged by society, and something within me was set free." They further emphasized the importance of gaining acceptance from family and colleagues, noting that embracing diverse perspectives can be a strength. Respecting diversity involves actively listening and taking the time to build relationships. The students learned that creating a society where we can mutually accept each other's "differences" is paramount. Teikyo University is dedicated to initiatives like this seminar, aimed at deepening understanding of diversity. The goal is to foster a society that embraces all forms of "difference." Through these efforts, the university is committed to shaping a more inclusive future.
