Hachioji CampusStudents Collaborate with Ginza Suehiro Cafeteria Services to Promote Data Science Education

Teikyo University's Faculty of Literature, Department of Sociology held its "Honors Program Research Results Presentation" on Tuesday, January 24, 2023, at the Hachioji Campus. This year, the university signed an agreement with Ginza Suehiro Cafeteria Services Co., Ltd. to promote data science education. As part of this initiative, Professor Hirokuni Oura of the Department of Sociology at the Faculty of Liberal Arts taught "Contemporary Sociology Special Topic A II" using actual data from Solatio Kitchen, the student cafeteria at Hachioji Campus, operated by Ginza Suehiro Cafeteria Services Co., Ltd.

During the class, students analyzed actual sales data to identify the best-selling products and purchase costs. They devised strategies to increase sales and reduce purchase costs, which they presented at the research presentation. The manager of Soratio Kitchen also attended the lecture, which led to lively discussions with the students. Reflecting on the experience, students commented, "I realized the difficulty and fun of improving real-world problems," and "This was a very practical exercise that gave us an opportunity to work with real data that we would not otherwise have had access to." By considering Soratio Kitchen from both the user's and the manager's perspectives, students gained valuable insight and practical experience that will serve them well in the real world.
