Kasumigaseki CampusFaculty of Economics Department of International Economy and Okinaga Research Institute jointly held a symposium titled “Causes and Effects of the Russia-Ukraine Conflict”

On November 14, 2022 (Monday), a symposium commemorating the 5th anniversary of the Department of International Economy, Faculty of Economics, was held at the Kasumigaseki Campus of Teikyo University.

In the first part, Professor Franck Michelin explained why the Putin administration does not recognize the legitimacy of the Ukrainian government and its existence as a nation-state, while analyzing the historical views of the Putin administration. Next, Professor Taku Suzuki of the same department examined how the corruption issue between Russia and Ukraine has created "ties" and conflicts between the two, and the impact that this has had on the war from both the causes and consequences. did. Professor Toshihiro Nakanishi explored and explained the major changes in the energy market caused by Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the outlook for the energy situation from multiple perspectives. Lastly, Senior Assistant Professor Hiroryo Ito of the same department considered the issue of Ukrainian refugees, comparing it with the system of accepting Syrian refugees in Turkey, which is the world's largest refugee host country.

The second part of the panel discussion, moderated by Fumikazu Sugiura of the department Professor and joined by Hideo Futamura of the department Professor and Junki Sasaki of the University Okinaga Research Institute Assistant Professor, focused on the impact of the conflict in Ukraine on Japan and its future prospects. The first half of the discussion delved further into the impact of the conflict, including an evaluation of the policy of weaponization of food, resources, and energy; the relationship between Saudi Arabia, Russia, and the United States and its impact on the Japanese economy; and Japan's response and evaluation of the refugee crisis. In the second half of the session, we discussed the causes of the conflict, including why Russia invaded Ukraine and how the informal economic ties and frictions between the two countries created conflicts of interest. Each expert presented a variety of perspectives on the causes and effects of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, which led to a meaningful discussion time, including questions from the participants.
