Teikyo University Museum Special Exhibition"The Kings of Africa": An exploration of Africa beginning with the Bakoko people

Overview

The Yoshioka Laboratory will be holding the "Kings of Africa Exhibition" at the Teikyo University Museum.
This exhibition is an international cultural exchange project realized based on the exchange between Teikyo University and the Bakoko Kingdom of Cameroon. It all began with a single letter. The trust and respect that were nurtured across national borders and cultural differences have now come to fruition in the form of this exhibition.

This exhibition features a special video message from His Majesty the King of the Bakoko Kingdom, as well as photographic and video materials that convey the kingdom's history, culture, art, and the lives of its people. In addition, the exhibition will showcase, for the first time in Japan, symbolic traditional textiles of the kingdom bestowed upon the exhibition by His Majesty the King, along with items such as a hat, whisk, and necklace that His Majesty actually used, introducing the charm of African kingdom culture that continues to this day.

In the modern era, Africa is attracting global attention as a region of great potential and vitality. However, opportunities to directly experience its history and culture are not abundant in Japan. We hope that this exhibition will serve as an opportunity for visitors to deepen their understanding of Africa and become a bridge of new friendship and exchange between Japan and Cameroon, and furthermore, between Japan and Africa.

With the words of His Majesty the King of Bakoko in mind, I sincerely hope that this exhibition will bring new perspectives and hope to the younger generation who will shape the future, and contribute to the realization of mutual understanding and a peaceful international society.
