Overview

Why not have an intellectually stimulating experience with your child at a university museum?
Parents wondering where to take their children, and children of all ages (preschoolers, elementary, and junior high school students), how about a science experience at the University Museum located on Teikyo University's Hachioji Campus? The Teikyo University Museum offers a variety of workshops where you can easily experience science. There's something for everyone, from familiar topics that you might not often get to experience, to more specialized topics unique to a university setting. We look forward to your participation.

We use microscopes to observe familiar objects such as airborne bacteria, parasites, pond water, and everyday items collected in university classrooms.

[Title] Let's become a gem expert!
[Lecturer] Takuto Kanai (Senior Assistant Professor Research Institute of Cultural Properties, Teikyo University)

Sparkling gemstones. How much do you know about gemstones? In this course, you will learn about different types of gemstones, their characteristics, and how to distinguish them while observing exhibits in a museum. Furthermore, you will investigate gemstones using the power of science and even try your hand at polishing them. Let's aim to become gemstone experts by seeing, touching, and experiencing!

[Title] Mini Fossil Excavation Experience

We use an excavation kit that includes ammonite and real shark tooth fossils from 50 million years ago embedded in special plaster. You carefully excavate by scraping away the plaster with a spatula or skewer. You can take home the fossils you unearth.

[Title] Let's make a microscope using a plastic bottle

Using a plastic bottle, we will create a simple, homemade microscope based on the same principle as the simple microscope made by Antoni van Leeuwenhoek in the late 17th century in the Netherlands. Please also take a look at our microscope collection on display.

[Title] Let's Make a Topographic Model Using Plastic Containers
【Instructor】Sotaro Tsuboi (Teikyo University Faculty of Economics Department of Regional Economics Professor)

Through creating a three-dimensional topographic model of the area surrounding Teikyo University's Hachioji Campus using plastic container lids, we aim to deepen our understanding of the region's characteristics and disaster risks from the perspectives of geography and disaster prevention engineering.

[Title] Let's make an umbrella marker

We will create umbrella markers using illustrations from Howington's "Natural History" (1761-1785), which is currently on display. This book is about natural history, created using the classification system of nature devised by Carl Linnaeus (1720-1798). It was imported to Japan during the Edo period and had a great influence on Japanese scholars.

[Title] "Space Can" made with alcohol ink art!
[Lecturer] Masumi Onuki (Associate Professor, Faculty of Education Department of Elementary Education Education, Teikyo University)

By dripping ink and adding alcohol, the ink spreads and mixes with neighboring colors, creating unexpectedly beautiful works of art. How you drip the ink is entirely up to you. Even beginners can create a unique and wonderful piece. Make lots of them and turn them into magnets to display your favorites!
