2024 ATC Lecture Series:The Role of Engines in Realizing a Carbon-Neutral Society

Date and time

June 6, 2024 (Thursday) 16:40-18:10

Overview

It has become essential to realize a carbon-neutral society to prevent global warming, and there is a growing movement toward BEVs in automobiles. However, because the amount of CO2 emitted during power generation varies greatly depending on the type of power plant, and the amount of CO2 produced during battery manufacturing is large, simply converting to BEVs will not eliminate CO2 emissions from automobiles, and the infrastructure is not in place. It is a bigger problem in developing countries. Given this current situation, in order to quickly achieve carbon neutrality in automobiles, it is essential to reduce CO₂ by not only converting to BEVs but also electrifying powertrains, such as HEVs, and improving engine thermal efficiency. In this lecture, we will discuss the necessity of engines and the latest technological developments.
