"Language and Culture Exchange Program"
designed for all students
In the first semester of the second year, international students will have the opportunity to study at a Japanese national university outside of Tokyo, either at Shimane University in Matsue City or Shiga University in Hikone City. As part of the Program, international students will not only learn Japanese language but also experience the diversity of Japanese regional cultures and local industries. Meanwhile all Japanese students will study abroad to improve their English ability at one of Teikyo University's many partner academic institutions.

From the first year to the fourth year, students will take part in small-group seminars where Japanese and international students work together, communicating in Japanese and English, to develop an understanding of other cultures.
Understanding and promoting
"Japan in the World"
The Department offers comprehensive courses that allow students to understand Japan from different global perspectives. Students explore their own research themes, study the issues facing the global community and develop the ability to solve these issues. Utilizing that ability, the Department enables the development of human resources who can be active in overseas companies, international organisations, NGOs/NPOs, international exchange of governmental and local agencies, inbound companies among many others.
Enhancing communication skills through intensive language learning
In the first year, international students will be expected to attend fundamental Japanese language courses every weekday. In the second year, students will improve their proficiency through the "Language and Culture Exchange Program". These two years will be subsequently followed by applied and advanced Japanese language courses that further enhance the students' language skills.

At Shimane University, I am taking a class about Shimane's culture with other students. I also study Japanese with exchange students from various countries.
Every day here is very fulfilling. I joined the karate club and practice every morning and evening. Due to the small number of members, we are teaming up with the same practice partners every week. So, I have already become friend with the other members. I also joined the dance club because I wanted to challenge myself while being in Shimane. I'm a beginner but the older members are very kind and teach me carefully. So, it's fun. I'm glad I joined a club other than karate because I made more friends through practicing dancing. Every morning, I am busy, always learning new things and having new experiences. I think I can grow as a person while I'm in Shimane. The content of classes is a bit difficult, but if I repeat everything well I can keep up. I am aiming to become an interpreter. So, I think the language class in San'in Japanese is the most interesting one.
Classes other than Japanese also have many very practical and interesting contents such as culture, language, well-known places, history, and art related to Shimane Prefecture. I gain different impressions from each class. For example, in the class on modern and contemporary history of the San'in region, we learned that Shimane's mines were a condition for trade negotiations with the West, and that local landowners built Shimane castle in 1603 to protect their families. This was a lot of fun. Shimane is a prefecture with a long history of significance for Japan. Beautiful sights, delicious food, and very kind people. When I lived in Tokyo, I heard a lot about Japan's aging population, declining birthrate, and depopulation. I felt that the population was sparse and aging. On the other hand, the rhythm of life here is very impressive, allowing one to live a leisurely and peaceful life.

Last year, I came to Japan from Mongolia to study at Teikyo University. My year in Tokyo was filled with new and unforgettable experiences and memories. Three months have already passed since I came to Shimane Prefecture.
There are many things in Shimane that I cannot do in Tokyo. For example, in the class "Japanese affairs", we visit all kinds of beautiful traditional heritage sites as a field trip to learn more about Japan. It is necessary to observe various things in such places and summarize them in a report. You can clearly see the characteristics of Japan's nature.
There are many exchange students from various countries who come to study at Shimane University. So, I think it's a good chance to make friends. Also, the teachers and Japanese students are really kind, and they always help me when I don't understand something. So, I'm very happy.
The food is delicious and it is very convenient to go to various places from Matsue Station. Dear international students, please look forward to join the Department of Global Japanese Studies at Teikyo University!

The teachers at Shiga University explain all things in detail so that we can understand them better. There are assignments every day, what is a bit intensive, but it really teaches me and brings out my full potential. Also, thanks to the university environment and the proximity to my home, studying at the library and home assignments are very convenient, easy and quick to do. In class, I learn a lot about the Japanese way of thinking, language, customs among others.
Some of the dialects we learned in class can be often heard when walking around the town. For example, "So desu ne" → "So ya naa" (Eng: "Yes" or "I agree") . What I learned in class is interesting because I often encounter it in my daily life.
It's really quiet here, and I thought it is the perfect place to concentrate on my studies. When I was in Tokyo, the streets and stations were crowded, but here it's very quiet.
In contrast to Tokyo, all is about the strenght of the legs in Hikone. You have to walk a lot to get to where you can buy your groceries and utilities. There are few convenience stores nearby, and a lot of cars pass by these days.
On weekends, I try to go out or research for my classes on Japan and topics that interest me. I also started participating in volunteer circles and Japanese exchange meetings with my friends. I think I am leading a very good academic life. I wanted to know more about Kansai, so I traveled to many places. I love landscapes. I tasted a lot of new traditional Kansai dishes, and living together with the people of Shiga was a great experience.

I have chosen this department because I am interested in international relations and wanted to use it as an opportunity to learn more about people and cultures abroad.
I was a little bit overwhelmed at first because there are many people from different ethnic backgrounds on campus, not only at our faculty. I was worried about one week whether I would be able to make friends and whether I would be able to study well. But after a while, I was able to find great friends, and I am grateful for having my friends around also for my academic study.
Also, in addition to studying about Japan, it's interesting to learn about other cultures from my friends because I can learn about many things that I haven't get in touch with before.

Newly opened in April 2021, OUCHI COMMONS provides a communication space for Japanese and international students in a cosy Japanese-style room. Various international events are held in this “home away from home”.

Tuition for studying at the Department
of Global Japanese Studies
As a part of curriculum, all students are required to participate in the "Language and Culture Exchange Program" for which additional fees will be required. Japanese students will study in the U.K., Australia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam or Cambodia, meanwhile international students will study at Shimane University or Shiga University in Japan.
