Teikyo University Signs Exchange Agreement with Finland’s University of Turku

Tuesday, September 6, 2022. With a focus on collaborative research and academic exchange activities, the Department of Hygiene and Public Health of the Teikyo University School of Medicine has signed an agreement with the Department of Internal Medicine of the University of Turku, Finland. The University of Turku is Finland's national university with seven faculties and around 23,000 students, of whom 5,000 are doctoral students. It was established in 1920 and dates back to the 17th century Royal Academy of the University of Turku, and is the second-largest university in Finland.

Takayoshi Ohkubo, Chair of the Department of Hygiene and Public Health at the University's Faculty of Medicine, and Kei Asayama, Professor of the same department, started working together in the research group of Professor Teemu Niiranen of the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Turku around 2010. They are still actively engaged in international joint research. This agreement is expected to advance and continue the current international collaborative research, and both universities are expected to publish novel, ground-breaking findings one after the other. In particular, we intend to take an opportunity to hold regular international joint research meetings for early biomarkers of renal failure (UPRIGHT-HTM), central blood pressure (IDCARS), and home and ambulatory blood pressure (IDHOCO, IDACO) at Teikyo University and the University of Turku. These related research activities have been conducted in dozens of countries, including Japan and Finland. The initiatives will help Teikyo University educate researchers and doctors with a broad-based research mindset as well as medical professionals with an international perspective. This is the first exchange agreement between Teikyo and Finland. Further research exchange in the fields of medicine and public health is expected in the future.
