Teikyo University rugby club wins fifth straight national title

On Sunday January 12, the Teikyo University rugby club (based at Hachioji campus) defeated Waseda University 41 to 34 in the final of the 50th National University Championships at the National Olympic Stadium in Shinjuku, Tokyo. In doing so, Teikyo University became the first university to win five championships in a row.

The last ever finals match to be played at the National Olympic Stadium in its current guise was a fiercely fought and relentlessly attacking affair, with Teikyo scoring six tries and Waseda five. The score was 12 to 10 at half time, with Teikyo eventually running out winners 41 to 34. The result was nothing less than the players and support staff deserved for their hard work through the year, not to mention the vocal band of supporters at the ground.
