School Philosophy

The mission of Teikyo University is to educate students,
to help them acquire a wide range of knowledge,
encouraging constant effort, eliminating any prejudice,
to enhance their ability to make decisions from global perspectives, and to foster their imagination and reflection to become specialists through experience in actual settings.

Establishment of Teikyo University in 1966

The "School Philosophy of Teikyo University," which was set in place when Japan was at the height of its economic growth, is still active on campus. Starting with the Faculties of Economics and Literature, the university has expanded to consist of the Faculty of Medicine and other diverse faculties and departments.

The university provides students with opportunities to learn and research, to experience cutting-edge, team medical practice, and to enjoy sports and cultural activities, in an environment where individual students can enhance their personal growth.

With an educational focus on "practice, globalization and openness," the university respects and supports individual efforts in such a way as to enhance students' ability to create their own future.

Educational programs are designed to encourage students to think and act independently and to express their individuality. Students will be able to identify and improve their own abilities and are encouraged to set challenging goals.

Greeting from the President

After graduating from KeioJunior High School and KeioSenior High School,Mr. Okinaga obtained a Bachelor of Engineering degree from the Faculty of Science & Engineering,KeioUniversity,and a Master of Engineering in machine engineering from Keio University Graduate Faculty of Science and Technology. In 1993,Mr. Okinaga became the president of Okinaga Gakuen Corporation. From March 1998,he took the post of Vice President at TeikyoHeiseiUniversity. Mr. Okinaga has been the President of Teikyo University Corporation since January,2002,and the President of Teikyo University since October,2002.

School History

1931 TeikyoCommercialSchool was established in Shibuya Ward,Tokyo(present day TeikyoUniversitySenior High School).
1944 Teikyo Womens'Industrial and CommercialSchool was established.
1962 TeikyoJunior College(Department of Home Economics)was established.
1965 Teikyo Women's Junior College(Department of English Literature)was established.
1966 TeikyoUniversity was established(Department of Economics at Faculty of Economics,Department of Japanese Literature and Department of English Literature at Faculty of Liberal Arts) "Clear concepton an ideal university ""A unique university that responds to the society's needs ""Enhance young people's talent and individuality by offering great facilities and high quality education provided by high level teachers. " With these basic principles,TeikyoUniversity was founded.
1967 Faculty of Law was established.
1971 Faculty of Medicine was established. Based on the belief that medicine is the most practical field of sciences,the school founder aimed at creating a full-scale university with a Faculty of medicine. In this year,Faculty of Medicine was founded at the Hachioji campus and the Itabashi campus. This led to an increase of applicants to TeikyoUniversity' schools of economics,law and literature,TeikyoJunior College and Teikyo Women's Junior College,as well. As a result,the level of the entrants was also improved.
1973 Department of Education was added to Faculty of Liberal Arts
1977 Doctoral programs were launched at the Department of Medicine,TeikyoUniversityGraduateSchool. Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences was established at TeikyoUniversity. The Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences was established at a campus built near LakeSagami as the first pharmaceutical school in the prefecture. Measures such as construction of water purification system were taken to protect the lake's environment.
1979 Masters Degree Programs were launched at the Department of Liberal Arts,TeikyoUniversityGraduateSchool.
1981 Masters Degree Programs were launched at the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at TeikyoUniversityGraduateSchool.
1982 Masters Degree Programs were launched at the Department of Economics at TeikyoUniversityGraduateSchool
1983 Doctoral Programs were launched at the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at TeikyoUniversityGraduateSchool. Masters Degree Programs were launched at the Department of Law at TeikyoUniversityGraduateSchool. Doctoral Programs were launched at the Department of Liberty Arts at TeikyoUniversity GraduateSchool.
1984 Department of History was added to the Faculty of Liberal Arts at TeikyoUniversity. Department of Secretarial Studies was launched at Teikyo Women's Junior College.
1985 Doctoral Programs were launched at the Department of Economics at TeikyoUniversityGraduateSchool.
1986 Doctoral Programs were launched at the Department of Law at TeikyoUniversityGraduateSchool.
1987 Teikyo University of Engineering and Science were established . (Department of Information Engineering,Department of Information System,and Department of Business Information were launched at the Faculty of Information Studies. )KyushuTeikyoJunior College was established. (Department of English Literature,Department of Japanese Literature and Department of Management Information Studies were launched. )
1988 Department of Psychology and Department of International Studies were launched at the Faculty of Liberal Arts,TeikyoUniversity. Department of Home Economics at Teikyo Junior College was renamed Department of Living Science.
1989 Department of Mechanical and Precision System,Department of Material Science and Engineering,Department of Electricity and Electronics System,Department of Information Science and Department of Bioscience were launched at the Faculty of Science & Engineering,TeikyoUniversity. With emphasis on practical application and an open attitude towards education,TeikyoUniversityrecognizes the importance of university-business alliance. The Faculty of Science & Engineering located at Utsunomiya,which is one of the designated techno polis cities in Japan,plays a vitalrole in the university's efforts to contribute to industries through a variety of research studies including a joint project with Nippon Steel Corporation. TeikyoSchoolU. K. High School was established.
1990 Teikyo University of Japan in Durham was established. Teikyo Foreign Studies Program(The Japanese Language Course)was launched at TeikyoUniversity. TeikyoLorettoHeightsUniversity was established. WestTokyoScienceUniversity was established(Department of Electronics and Information Science,Department of Bioscience,Department of Material Engineering,and Department of Administrative Engineering were launched at the Faculty of Science & Engineering. )Teikyo Heisei Junior College was established(Department of Nursing Science)
1992 Teikyo University Berlin Campus was established. London Campus of Teikyo Women's Junior College and KyushuTeikyoJunior College was established. Master's Degree Degree Programs were launched at the Department of Information Studies,Teikyo University of Engineering and ScienceGraduateSchool.
1993 Department of Special Studies was established at TeikyoHeiseiJunior College
1994 Doctoral Programs were launched at the Department of Informatics and Department of Culture and Information at the Faculty of Engineering and Science,TeikyoUniversity. Masters Degree Programs were launched at the Department of Science and Engineering at WestTokyoScienceUniversityGraduateSchool. KyushuTeikyoJunior College relocated its London Campus to Denver,USA.
1995 Teikyo University of Engineering and Science was renamed TeikyoHeiseiUniversity.
1996 WestTokyoUniversity was renamed TeikyoScienceUniversity. Doctoral Programs were launched at the Department of Science and Engineering,TeikyoScienceUniversityGraduateSchool.
1997 Department of Welfare and Information was launched at TeikyoHeiseiUniversity. Department of Management Engineering at TeikyoScienceUniversity was renamed Department of Management System.
1998 Department of Material Engineering at TeikyoScienceUniversity was renamed Department of Environment and Material. Teikyo Women's College was renamed TeikyoJunior College and became co-ed. Institute Bahasa Teikyo was established.
1999 Department of Japanese Literature and Department of English Literature at TeikyoUniversity were renamed Department of Japanese and Asian Language and Culture and Department of Anglo-American Language and Culture,respectively. Department of English Literature and Department of Secretarial Studies at Teikyo Junior College was renamed Department of International Communication and Department of Information Business,respectively. Kyushu Teikyo Junior College was renamed TeikyoUniversityFukuokaJunior College. (Department of English Literature,Department of Japanese Literature,Department of Business Administrative and Information Studies were also renamed Department of International Communication,Department of Japanese and Japan Studies,and Department of Management and Information,respectively.
2000 Masters Degree Program was launched for clinical psychology major students at Department of Science and Engineering,TeikyoUniversityGraduateSchool. Department of Environment and Business was launched at the Faculty of Economics,TeikyoUniversity. Department of Electronics and Information at TeikyoScienceUniversity was renamed Department of Media Science.
2001 Masters Degree Programs were launched for psychology major students and international general culture major students at the Department of Liberty Arts,TeikyoUniversityGraduateSchool. Department of Material Science and Engineering at the Faculty of Science & Engineering was renamed Department of Aerospace Engineering. Department of Administrative Information Studies at TeikyoUniversityFukuoka Junior College was renamed Department of Information and Business.
2002 Department of Clinical Psychology,Department of Speech and Audiology,Department of Occupational Therapy,and Department of Physiotherapy were established at the Faculty of Health and Medicine,TeikyoHeiseiUniversity. Department of Animal Science was established at the Faculty of Science & Engineering,TeikyoScienceUniversity. TeikyoJunior College relocated its Durham branch to Denver,USA.
2004 Master's Degree and Doctoral Programs were launched for economics major students at the Department of Economics,TeikyoUniversityGraduateSchool. A doctorate course was launched for general engineering science and technology major students at the Department of Science and Engineering,TeikyoUniversityGraduateSchool. Department of Orthoptics was established at the Faculty of Medical Engineering,TeikyoUniversity. Department of Physical Care and Department of Nursing were launched at the Faculty of Human Care,TeikyoHeiseiUniversity. Department of Pharmaceutical Science was established at the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences,Teikyo Heisei University.
2005 A doctoral course was launched for psychology-major students at the Department of Liberty Arts,TeikyoUniversityGraduateSchool. Japanese and Asian Language and Culture course at the Department of Liberal Arts,TeikyoUniversityGraduateSchool,was renamed Japanese Cultures course. Master's Degree and Doctoral Programs were launched for the Clinical Psychology Course and the Rehabilitation Course at the Department of Health Information Science,TeikyoHeiseiUniversity. The Animal Science Course and the Administrative Information Systems Course at the Department of Science and Engineering,TeikyoUniversityGraduateSchool,were integrated and renamed Media Information Systems Course. Department of Prehospital Care,Department of Clinical Engineering was established at the Faculty of Medical Engineering,TeikyoUniversity,and Department of Physiotherapy and Department of Occupational Therapy were launched at the TeikyoUniversityFukuokaMedicalTechnicalSchool. Department of Japanese and Asian Language and Culture at the Faculty of Liberal Arts,TeikyoUniversity,was renamed Department of Japanese Cultures. Department of Human Culture,Department of Business Management,Department of Information Science were launched at the Faculty of Modern Life,TeikyoHeiseiUniversity.
